MICHAEL WALFORD, PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR DATE: JULY 16, 1985 SUBJECT: CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION TO LYLE BURKS Specific Requests or Recommendations & Background & Justification I. RECOMMENDED ACTION: Authorize Chairwoman to execute a certificate expressing appreciation to Lyle Burks for his many hours of unselfish and devoted service in coordinating the County Employees' Blood Drive for ten years. II. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. III. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION/BACKGROUND: In 1974 Lyle Burks voluntarily took responsibility for coordinating the numerous tasks involved in sponsoring a County blood drive and subsequently became its Chairman, a position he kept for the next ten years. During each of the first six years, Lyle organized two drives each year. Then due to the growing response which resulted from Lyle' s widespread publicity campaign , a third drive was added, significantly increasing donations to the Alameda-Contra Costa Blood Bank. The overwhelming success of Lyle' s long hours and dedicated efforts from 1974 through 1984, accounted for over 8000 pints of blood donated by County employees being made available for medical emergencies and to repay hospitals for blood needed by employees and their dependents.
