THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA
Adopted this Order on June 25 . 1985 , by the following vote:
AYES: Supervisors Fanden, Schroder, McPeak,Torlakson
NOES: None
ABSENT: Supervisor Powers
ABSTAIN: None
SUBJECT: COMMENDATION OF BETSY PAGE Resolution No. 85/388
Today we commend Betsy Page .for her many years of dedication to the
betterment of government and education. Her initiative, strength,
thoroughness and indomitable spirit permeate her search for a more
honest and caring community.
Betsy believes that the governments in our lives should constantly
reach toward caring for the citizens. When they are not, she acts-
writes, meets, talks, cajoles, and maybe, a time or two, threatens.
She indeed "puts her money where her mouth is. "
Lafayette Forward, which she co-founded, works to locate qualified
candidates, assists in their campaigns and recognizes their work.
Through the League of Women Voters of Diablo Valley, Betsy researched
and "dug new ground" in campaign finance reform and, indeed, is
considered an expert on the subject. This woman, who by no means
deals with politics and government only in the abstract, has been a
leader in local, county., state, and national campaigns both as a
volunteer and a professional. Recently, she has been thrilled
about the possibility of computerizing her campaign strategies.
A ferninist, Betsy asked after studying the 1964 Civil Rights Act,
"What about women 's rights?" Her work with the League, National
Women' s Political Caucus, and the Lafayette Democratic Club strove
to answer that question.
Betsy' s interest in education has been just as intense and creative
as her interest in politics. Twenty years ago, she dared to ask
another question, "Don't- children have differing educational needs?"
As head of the Springhill Elementary School PTA, she struggled to
convince educational leaders that they should provide for students'
individual requirements. Several years later she carried her
educational "light" to John F. Kennedy University, becoming assistant
to the dean of the Liberal and Professional Arts Department and
being remembered as the constant searcher for solutions.
Itis: fitting that this plaque be placed in the Lafayette Community
Center in an office space she helped secure from the City of
Lafayette for the use of non-profit organizations in Contra Costa
County.
We, the members of the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County,
commend Betsy Page for her dedication to her community, for her
inspired leadership to so many of her friends and associates, and
for never giving up.
