TO: BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
FROM: John H. deFremery, Agricultural Commission COI1tt"a
Director of Weights and Measures Costa
DATE: Coin
SUBJECT: Legislation - .Request Support Position on AB 872 (Costa)
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
I. RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Approve/authorize Chair to support the passage of
Assembly Bill 872 (Costa) .
II. FINANCIAL IMPACT:
AB 872, if enacted, would require that the Director
allocate to County Apiary, Nursery and Seed Programs funds
totalling $475 ,000. If AB 872 passes, Contra Costa would
receive approximately $6,000 in additional revenue in F.Y.
1985-86 . At present the County receives approximately $6,000
in revenue from industry sources via the State Department
of Food and Agriculture for these programs.
III. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION:
Statewide, the County Apiary, Nursery and Seed Programs
have suffered from lack of funding. This is a step toward
the concept that these programs will be funded 1/3 by industry,
1/3 by the' State and 1/3 by the County.
IV. BACKGROUND:
The State Department of Food and Agriculture is aware
of the need for the additional funding for these programs and
is supportive of AB 872 .
V. CONSEQUENCES OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
Failure of AB 872 to pass will result in the loss of
approximately $6, 000 in additional revenue in F.Y. 1985-86
to our County and will allow further erosion of these programs
to occur. -
