DATE:

SUBJECT: Legislation: SB 495 (Petris)
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) $ BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt a position of support for SB 495 which would require the
State Department of Health Services to establish a program on
occupational health and occupational disease prevention by
January 1, 1987 and report on the program to the Legislature by
January 1, 1988.
BACKGROUND:
Under existing law, the State Department of Health Services is
required to maintain a program on occupational health and
occupational disease prevention. However, apparently, such a
program has not been established despite the passage of
legislation last year. SB 495 would set a deadline for
establishment of this program and would require a report to the
Legislature. The Health Services Department believes that our
extensive occupational health program would be benefited from
increased State effort in this field and has recommended
support for the bill. This office concurs in this
recommendation.
