Spooner, Contracts Administrator4io COSta DATE: March 28, 1985 County SUBJECT: Approval of Funding Application for the Immunization Assistance Program SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION I. RECOMMENDED ACTION: Approve submission of Funding Application 4429-208-25 in the amount of $45,731.73 to the State Department of Health Services for continuation of the Immunization Assistance Program for the period July 1, 1985 - June 30, 1986. II. FINANCIAL IMPACT: Approval of this application by the State could result in $45,731.73 of funding which will be budgeted in the 1985-86 budget submitted by the Department. County funding of approximately $9,000 may be required for clerical support, printing and mailing costs. III. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION/BACKGROUND: On June 26, 1984 the Board approved Contract 4429-208-24 with the State Department of Health Services for continuation of the County's long-standing Immunization Assistance Program for FY 1984-85. Funding Application #29-208-25 requests State funding for continuation of services during FY 1985-86. Contra Costa County maintains this program to make immunizations available to all persons in need of this service. Local Immunization Assistance Program Staff assists all county school districts, private schools, preschools and day care cen- ters in meeting the state-mandated immunization requirements through inservice programs and limited technical assistance. Staff also maintains an adverse reac- tion monitoring system and outbreak control team. The goals of the Immunization Assistance Program are to prevent the occurrence and transmission of childhood diseases preventable through immunization and to maintain immunization levels at 95% or greater for infants, children, and adolescents. Additional information on this program is included in the attached Narrative Statement. This document has been approved by the Department's Contracts and Grants Administrator in accordance with the guidelines approved by the Board's Order of December 1, 1981 (Guidelines for contract preparation and processing) Health Services Department). CONSEQUENCES OF NEGATIVE ACTION: Failure to approve this application will result in loss of State funding for the Immunization Assistance Program. The County will not continue to receive free vac- cine from the State if the contract with the State Department of Health Services is not maintained. Without State funding, the Department could not continue to monitor schools, preschools, and day care centers to assist in meeting the State-mandated immuniza- tion requirements.
