Through a special contract arrange- ment, we have the free use of a terminal and a printer to access the Lexis computer data bank and are only required to pay for our computer time. Once this arrangement ends, it will be necessary to either lease the equipment for about $300 per month or purchase our own equipment., The California District Attorney's Association has a computerized case data bank in Sacramento which is available for our use at no cost. We intend to access this system through the use of the IBM PC terminal. This office has five IBM Displaywriter word processors with a sixth one on order. These word processors are being used to prepare points & authorities, motions, court calendars, Misdemeanor Complaints and Felony Informations. Once we come on line with the computerized Law & Justice System, we will need to acquire additional word processors. We have been advised by the Law & Justice Systems Development staff to acquire the less expensive IBM PCs for our future word processing needs. To aid us in making the decision of additional dedicated word processors versus IBM PCs, we hope to find time in the use of the IBM PC/XT to test out the practicality of using this equipment for our future word processing needs. An experienced Displaywriter operator will be selected to conduct this test. It is realized that we have outlined an ambitious plan of utilization for this PC. However, it is our belief that we can accomplish all that we have outlined herein if we adhere to a rigid schedule in the use of this equipment. The Administrative Services Officer will be placed in charge of developing this plan of utilization. ( 1 1-0"4 - CONTRA COSTA COUNTY APPROPRIATION ADJUSTMENT T/C 2 T I.
