SUBJECT: VD AWARENESS MONTH
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
That April be declared VD Awareness Month in Contra Costa County by
the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:
None
REASON FOR RECOMMENDATION:
To increase community awareness of VD prevention and the need to
respond rapidly to disease suspicion.
BACKGROUND:
Venereal diseases continue to occur at high levels in the county and
throughout the nation. We are aware that of the 2000+ GC cases
reported, many more are not. Most cases can be easily cured but some
develop complications. Women, especially, are prone to develop
serious complications such as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. Of those
who develop Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, 10% or more become sterile.
Gonorrhea is only one of 20 or so conditions that can be sexually
transmitted. Chlamydia trachomatis is a more recently recognized
organism which can cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and can lead to
sterility.
Individuals, male and female, can harbor organisms that can be
sexually transmitted without having symptoms. These individuals are
nonetheless communicable. Laboratory tests are needed to establish
diagnosis. Once made, proper therapy can be prescribed.
