From: Captain Alan Burton, Comma er Subject: ELECTRONICS FOR BOAT Communications Divisions At your request, I have surve ed the electronics which had been removed from the Seabird and were scheduled for installation in the new boat. These are my observations. 1. The PA-20 siren is corroded from salt water and appears marginally operable, lacking reliability. This particular model was declared surplus and is no longer installed in vehicles. 2. The siren speaker that was removed cannot be located, and Mr. Teal is of the opinion that it was discarded. The' speaker was described as being "a rusty hulk" of metal and not worth salvaging. 3. The emergency lights removed from the Seabird cannot be located. Mr. Teach advises that he saw the lights after removal and noted that the base was mostly gone, eaten up by corrosion. The wiring had deteriorated and was bad. Mr. Teach remarked that he was amazed that the lights were still working, but they certainly could not have been safe. 4. The radio that was installed in the Seabird has been saturated in salt water and bears evidence of significant corrosion. The radio is about 15 years old, and is not water-tight. while the radio was working (we believe) upon removal, it would be impossible to do more than eliminate its reliability. It is my estimate that the radio is likely to fail during continued operation, and repairs will be extensive. This is due to the years it was in -service combined with salt water corrosion. New equipment will be installed on our new Crystaliner Patrol boat that is presently being built in southern California.
