SUBJECT: Ethylene Dibromide (EDB) Contamination in Food
The Board on March 13, 1984, authorized the Chairman to
send a letter to Governor Deukmejian urging that he take action to
set a standard in California which would eliminate the presence of
ethylene dibromide (EDB) in food by the end of 1984.
In an April 26, 1984, letter to the Board, Clare Berryhill,
Director, State Department of Food and Agriculture, 1220 N Street,
Sacramento 95814, (responding on behalf of Governor Deukmejian) ,
advised that largely through the efforts of his Department and the
State Department of Health Services, the U. S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) was stimulated into action to establish
national standards for EDB in food stuffs., ke:s commented on the
actions taken by the Department of Food and Agriculture to reduce
contamination in well water and baby food, the cancellation of its
use as a termiticide, prohibition of its use as a grain fumigant, and
the establishment of an EDB Advisory Committee to advise the
Department of Health Services on EDB issues. M=3�. Berryhill
transmitted the State Department of Health Services EDB Plan.
IT IS BY THE BOARD ORDERED that the aforesaid plan is
REFERRED to the Acting Health Services Director and the Agricultural
Commissioner-Director of Weights and Measures.
