Contra
FROM: C. E. Dixon, Interim County Administrator
Costa
DATE: May 9, 1984 County
SUBJECT: Legislation: SB 1334 (Ellis)
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt a position in support of SB 1334.
BACKGROUND:
Under existing law, authorized emergency vehicles owned or operated by a
governmental entity are exempt from Vehicle Code restrictions relating to size,
weight, and load when being used in responding to and returning from emergency
calls related to combating and suppressing fire. SB 1334 would expand this
exemption to make it applicable to all types of emergency calls rather than
only those involving combating and suppressing fire, and would make the exemption
specifically applicable to vehicles owned, operated, or rented by a county
flood control district or flood control and water conservation district during
emergency calls.
The Public Works Director recommends that the Board go on record in support of
SB 1334 in order to provide this additional flexibility to flood control
district heavy equipment when it is needed to .respond to an emergency.
SB 1334 passed the Senate March 22, 1984 on a vote of 32:0 and is scheduled to
be heard in the Assembly Transportation Committee on May 22, 1984.
Based on the recommendation of the Public Works Director, we would agree that
the Board should support SB 1334.
