HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 04101984 - T.1 BOARD OF SUPERVISORS FROM: DONI BLUMENSTOCK, CHAIR Contra CCC VOLUNTEER PROGRAM ADMINISTRATORS Costa DATE: MARCH 26, 1984 County SUBJECT: ANNUAL RECOGNITION OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY GOVERNMENT'S OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEERS SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(g) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION A PROCEDURE HAVING HERETOFORE BEEN ESTABLISHED, whereby annually special _. recognition is given by the Board of Supervisors, as an expression of its appreciation to the many volunteers who freely give of their time and talents in the performance of valuable services to the County, and IN CONNECTION THEREWITH, the Board, having approved the structure, function and composition of a committee to assist with the County's Volunteer Program and to screen and nominate individuals and organizations who warrant special awards, and IN AS MUCH AS Doni Blumenstock, Chair of the Volunteer Program Administrators ' Committee, having submit ted theCommittee's recommendations for the 1984 awards , NOW THEREFORE, IT IS BY THE BOARD QRDERED, as recommended by the Volunteer Program Administrator's Committee, that special recognition is given to the following, and the Chair of the Board is authorized to exercise appropriate certificates therefore to: VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR: BOCTOR ATHANASIOS, "Man Friday" at the County Hospital , who, as a retired accountant gives freely of his time to help the Hospital Auxiliary with the books, run errands and make deliveries , visit the lonely patients, plays Santa and distributes gifts to patients at Christmas time, provides a variety of on-.call tasks to enhance. patient care and assist staff, and greatly helps improve hospital morale. His willingness to help with what- ever taks needs to be done has endeared him to patients and staff alike, 'and makes him an inspiration to all ! VOLUNTEER COUPLE OF THE YEAR: JOSEPHINE and CHARLES BOHAKEL, SR. for their enthusiastic and innovative participation in, and leadership of, the Senior Brown Bag Program in Antioch; for making available through fund-raising, collection and distribution to low-income seniors a wide-range of fresh and nutritious food -- enhancing the regular Brown Bag package to enhance their diet. This retired couple gave freely of their time, combined talents, skills and experience to serve the community of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. VOLUNTEER GROUP OF THE YEAR: The volunteers of the Richmond Emergency Food Pantry, who have served for 12 years at the essential , but not very glamorous job of maintaining what was for years the only food source of its kind in West County. They have solicited food and other donations, set up and cleaned the Pantry and bagged groceries for thousands of needy people, to provide them with 3 days of emergency food.. With their many willing hands they have, to- gether, done much to elev tate the emergency hunger problem in West County. HONORABLE MENTION FOR'ALL BELOW RAY BISHOP: for his unmeasured concern and devotion to Juvenile Hall and its young residents.. NORMAN DOKE: for his 10 years of dedication and service to Social Service clients, and for providing dependable transportation for the elderly and disabled. ARNETTA GAYFIELD: for her sensitivity, dependability and concern in assisting Social Service clients with their needs. CHARLES GUNTZ: for his outstanding dependability and dedication to the Victim/Witness Assistance Program. CAMERON MURRAY: for his dependability, sense of humor, ability and willingness to work with County Library staff, inspite of a handicap. LUCILLE PIKE: for her contribution of time and .materi'als, and for her commitment to helping the young inmates of Juvenile Hall feel better about themselves. KATHERINE SUNDQUIST: for her valuable contri.button of more than 350 hours of documented work at the County Library and at home, -thus enabling the Library to continue 'to offer the came basic services, in spite of serious staff cuts. LOUIS WILLIFORD: for his continued concern in providing medical transportation to Social Service cl i,ents .on a regular, dependable basis, CELIA & CHARLES DAWSON: for their outstanding contribution to the frail and convalescing elderly who are institutionalized. EL SOBRANTE VALLEY PLANNING & ZONING COMM1tITTEE: for its continued services as a communica- tibns link between County Government and El Sobrante Valley area residents. LAFAYETTE SERVICE LEAGUE: for its outreach into i,ts community and service to the greater community through its on-going Food Basket Program, SECOND FIDDLE AUXILIARY: for its continued dedication to aiding in..drug abuse treatment and prevention services, i �a THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Adopted this Order on April 10, 1984 , by the following vote: AYES: Supervisors Powers, Fanden, Schroder, McPeak, Torlakson NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: None SUBJECT: Proposal to Honor Businesses RESOLUTION N0. 84/219 and Individuals for Services Rendered to Private Non-Profit and Service Organizations WHEREAS the Board of Supervisors having this day recognized the services of citizens who volunteer their time and services in support of County activities; and WHEREAS Supervisor Torlakson declared in his January 10, 1984 message upon taking the chair that 1984 would be the "Year of Citizen Involvement" ; and WHEREAS Supervisor Torlakson advised the Board that there is no similar way to recognize individuals and businesses having donated their time and money to more than 600 private non-profit- and service agencies within the County; and WHEREAS these organizations support the County in providing needed services to its residents at little or no additional cost to the County; and WHEREAS individuals and businesses should be honored periodically by the Board for services they have provided to private non-profit and service organizations; and WHEREAS Supervisor Torlakson informed the Board that staff of his office and representatives of the County Administrator' s Office, County Volunteer Coordinators, and the Volunteer Center have shared ideas as to how to implement such a program, and that the budget for such a program should not exceed $300 for a twelve month period; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors hereby APPROVES in concept the program proposed by Supervisor Torlakson whereby the Board can honor citizen participation in non-profit and service organizations within Contra Costa County. BE IT BY THE BOARD FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board hereby ESTABLISHES a committee composed of representatives of Supervisor Torlakson' s Office, the Office of the County Administrator , a repre- sentative of the County' s Volunteer Program Administrative Committee, and the Director of the Volunteer Center of Contra Costa County, and DIRECTS this committee to report back to the Board within thirty (30) days with a detailed plan to implement this program.
