SUBJECT: Veteran' s Memorial Building in Lafayette
The Board received a letter dated March 13, 1984 from
Gayle B. Uilkema, Mayor , City of Lafayette, commenting on the use,
maintenance and management of the Veteran' s Memorial Building in
Lafayette, and requesting the Board' s assistance in rectifying the
problems and deficiencies associated with said building.
Richard F. Holmes, representing the City of Lafayette,
appeared and described the poorly maintained condition of the
building and its lack of cleanliness. He urged the Board to take
action that would include either revoking for cause the existing
lease, revising the lease to require an annual audit of revenues and
expenditures 'by the management of the Veteran' s Building, or leasing
the building to the City of Lafayette or a corporation to be comprised
of veterans selected by the Lafayette City Council.

Percy Whitten, representing senior citizens groups who use
said Veteran' s Building, addressed his remarks to the poor maintenance
of the building, and suggested that consideration be given to
allowing the City of Lafayette taking over said lease.
Written comments were received from Jessica Johnson relative
to unsanitary conditions and poor maintenance, and K. P. Graunstadt, Sr.
relative to the accumulation of junkyard automobiles on the premises.
N. F. Bruzzoner representing the Board of Directors of the
Lafayette Veteran' s Building, commented on problems encountered by
groups using the building. He presented a brief summary of revenues
and expenses.
Following discussion by the Board and being in agreement,
IT IS , ORDERED that the County Administrator is REQUESTED to review
the concerns expressed relative to the Lafayette Veteran' s Memorial
Building and report to the Board as soon as possible.
