D. , Director of Public Health 'D ision FROM: Nancy C. Fander ', }V y V v SUBJECT: EDB , County Monitoring DATE : February 3 , 1984 As you knoe , my concerns over the increasing introduction of toxic chemicals into our drinking pater and food chains have been deep and of long standing. My opposition to spraying the Delta with herbicides is based on much study and thought. In that regard, I wish you to provide me with specific, vzritten discussion of the role the County plays in monitor- ing the 'pfesence of ED3 in the County . This report should cover the relationship between the activities of the Environ- mental Protection Agenc % and the County Health Department. It s ould also deal IVith the uses of EDB in agriculture and food processing in the County. I further want a report on the work the County does in chec.cing tine levels of EDB in food bought and consumed in the County as well as that purchased and used in County facilities . Constituents have been calling my office about this. They are worried because.Ley know Diquat, for example , is CTrCCiI KNowNra e contaminated with f- 1;1 They , and I , must know what the County is doing to protect them from possible excessive or over exposure to EDB. This is a matter of great urgency and I am, therefore, request- . ing your immediate response. NCF:htf cc: Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors
