Wingett, County Administrator ` Costa l.l u DATE: February 1 , 1984 qy SUBJECT: Legislation: AB 726 (Chacon and Agnos) SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION: Adopt a position in support of AB 726. BACKGROUND: Current law allows specified disabled persons to register as a permanent absent voter. AB 726 provides in addition that any person 65 years of age or older may also register as an absent voter. This bill furthers the appropriate use of the absentee ballot consistent with the existing policy of the Board of Supervisors. The Assistant Registrar believes enactment of AB 726 will not add any cost to his operation and might even save .money by not having to handle a request for an absentee ballot from these voters at each election. We would, therefore, recommend that the Board support AB 726. AB 726 passed the Assembly on January 30 and is currently pending committee assignment in the Senate.
