IN THE MATTER OF RECOGNIZING RESOLUTION NO. 2005/281
THE CALIFORNIA MARITIME
"AROUND-THE-HORN"
TRANSPORTATION HISTORY BILL
WHEREAS, the early settlement and development of California was deeply influenced by the immigrants
and goods that came to the State by way of the maritirne transportation routes by sailing around the
Horn of'South America and via the Isthmus of Panama, in addition to the more commonly used
routes of transcontinental migration;and
WHEREAS, the Pacific Maritime routes ate an essential educationalcomponent of the State's interpretive
history;and
WHEREAS,the recognition of this component within the State's history will result in more
cotnprehensi e'globalunderstandi g of the economic impact and.cultural settlementrole of
maritime trade routes; and
WHEREAS, holars and agencies are encouraged to collaborate in their research in€aider to develop a
fair an complete official State historical policy,including'the geograpnical'ancl- storic influences
of our historic seafaring populations;and
WHEREAS;there isa benefit from the development of a eompi altforniaory liaise on the world
history o£geography,cltruate-botany, transportation ani h an s ttlern€iztJemigration; and
WHEREAS,arra t a e ttai slat station continues to contribute to tlh economic foundatlQizs of Contra
Costa Cou ty,.as represented in the history of California conveyed-l3y,�a�:satliri 'ships contained in
the State Seal of California;and
