March 2004 as American Red Cross Month) RESOLUTION NO. 2004134
WHERZ S, the Bay Area Red Cross has an unparalleled record of helping residents of Contra Costa in
preventing preparing, and responding to life-threatening emergencies. They deliver relief services to victims of
disaster; offer health and safety training such as first aid, CPR and aquatic lifesaving; and provide emergency
communication services to military families. They participate in international humanitarian projects that save
lives; and collect blood from donors in 2003. These blood donations are made available through volunteers who
generously give the gift of life to help patients in need;and
WRER EAS, by joining the American Red Cross as a volunteer, course participant or instructor, contributor or
blood donor, you can help make the Contra Costa County community and our nation safer. Last year, the Red
Cross responded to many disasters in Contra Costa County,from home fires to flooding. During Red Cross relief
operations, volunteers assess damages and drive emergency response vehicles to distribute food and other supplies.
They provide shelter for families who have been evacuated from their homes and necessities to people in need; and
WHEREAS, the Bay Area American Red Cross and the American Red Cross Blood Services, Northern
California Region have devoted themselves to that goal of educating individuals,families, schools and businesses
in the community about what they can do at each threat level of the federal alert system to strengthen our
community's response in the event of future attacks and other disasters; and
9IWR;EM the American Red Cross also serves military families by delivering emergency messages between
soldiers and their families back home. With U.S. troops deployed overseas in the Middle East and elsewhere this
support has been especially important. Red Cross workers at home and overseas provide critical aid to the victims
of disease,famine,war and natural disasters•, and
NOW, :7HEREFOR& BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County
acknowledges . larch 2004 as Red" tiros Afonth and urges all residents of Contra Costa County to work
through the Bay Area American Red Cross and the American Red Cross Blood Services, Northern California
Region, to help prepare their families and this community for emergencies. Your time, financial support and
blood donations will support this worthy organization's mission to prevent and relieve suffering and to save lives.
PASSED AND ADOPTED ON March 9, 2004 by a unanimous vote of the Board members present.
