AND COMPASSIONATE SERVICE OF JANE
REAM WOOD
WHEREAS, Jane Beam Wood served for more than 20 years as an elected member of the Board
of Directors for the West Contra Costa Health Care District, which oversaw the former Brookside
Hospital in San Pablo;and
WHEREAS,Ms. Wood,as director, fought to save Brookside Hospital's existence when it was
threatened with closure; and
WHEREAS,Ms. Wood was instrumental in negotiating the lease of Brookside Hospital to the
Tenet Health Care Corporation; and
WHEREAS,Ms. Wood, in her decades as director, aggressively sought funding to develop and
improve several of the hospital's departments, including a Cancer Center, OB Women's Health
Center,and Outpatient's Services Program; and
WHEREAS,Ms. Wood worked to create the Brookside Community Health Center,a public,
low-cost primary care clinic located across the street from the hospital; and
WHEREAS,Ms. Wood is a passionate supporter of women's health care and of ensuring that
families of all economic backgrounds have access to dependable healthcare; and
WHEREAS,Ms. Wood served as a member of the West County Mayor's and Supervisor Sub-
committee on Health; and
WHEREAS,Ms. Wood is a former chair of the El Sobrante Chamber of Commerce, and a co-
founder of the El Sobrante Planning and Zoning Committee; and
WHEREAS,Ms. Wood was Congressman George Miller's West County representative;
WHEREAS, Ms. Woad recently moved to Oregon leaving behind an impressive West County
legacy,
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa
County hereby honors the tireless commitment and hard work of Jane Beam Wood and declares
March 12,2004 as Jane Beam Wood day in Contra Costa County.
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors members present on this 2nd day of March 2004.
