In the Matter of RESOLUTION NO.20OV20 RECOGNIZING MAY 2004 AS ASTHMA AWARENESS MONTH IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY WHEREAS,asthma can be a debilitating and life-threatening disease without appropriate diagnosis and treatment. WHEREAS,as many as 15 million people in the United States are affected by this chronic disease,including 4.8 million children. WHEREAS,the prevalence of asthma has been steadily increasing over the past 20 years with the largest increases in asthma among children under the age of five. WHEREAS, asthma is the #.1 cause of school absenteeism in children in the U.S. and results in missed workdays and lost productivity in adults. WHEREAS,a,recent study showed that African-American children in Contra Costa County are four times more likely to be hospitalized for asthma compared to white,non-Hispanic children. WHEREAS,limited access to care,lack of effective education about asthma management and exposure to triggers such as smoking and other air pollutants are three key factors increasing the severity of asthma in our community. WHEREAS, cooperation among organizations and individuals to coordinate services can improve the continuum of care and improve health outcomes: WHEREAS, the Contra`Costa Asthma,Coalition helps asthma related organizations to learn from each other,and coordinate their services,promotes public education and programs to reduce health disparities and:advocates for improved local,state and federal asthma programs,policies,and.legislation. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED,that the Board of Supervisors does.hereby recognize the month of May 2004 as Asthma Awareness Month in Contra Costa County and cabs upon the Contra Costa County Asthma Coalition and all business and private institutions, non-profit organizations, public schools, government agencies, and elected officials to work together to reduce the incidence of asthma among residents and alleviate the effects of asthma on the County's children and adults.
