SafetyB&Safe U.S.A. RESOLUTION NO. 2004/150
WHEREAS the number one preventable cause of death and injury of children and young adults
is the automobile collision; and
HW REAS approximately ISO children under sixteen are killed and over 24,000 injured in
automobile collisions each year in California; and
UWEREAS, up to 71°I of these children would be alive today if they had been properly
restrained in crash tested car safety seats or safety belts; and
UEREAS infants and young children are not capable of initiating action to use proper
restraints and are not protected adequately by automatic belts or air bags use; and
HWER S only about 60/ of children in this age group are protected by regular restraint use;
and
WHEREAS crash-tested safety seats are moderately priced and widely available for purchase at
retail stores and at low cost from car safety seat distribution programs throughout California; and
� EREAS the State of California has ruled that until children are both six years of age or sixty
pounds or more, they must be restrained in child safety seats when riding in motor vehicles and that
all other occupants must use safety belts; and
WMERFAS the goal of SafMB&Safe U.S.A. is to further the right of every child to protection
from injury or death while being transported in a motor vehicle:
NOW, THEREFORE, BEITRESOLVE'E.Dthat the Board of Supervisors does hereby declare
safety seat checkup week April 18 to April 24, 2004. PASSED AAD ADOPTED on April 6,
2004 by a unanimous vote of the Board members presen
