IN RECOGNITION OF RICHMOND CITY RESOLUTION NO. 2004/110
COUNCILMEMBER NAT BATES,
RECIPIENT OF THE 2004 DON BOSCO
SERVICE AWARD BY THE WEST CONTRA
COSTA SALESIAN BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB
WHEREAS, Nat Bates has livedin Richmond since he was 4; and
WHEREAS, Nat'Bates attended public schools in Richmond, Contra Costa Community College, San
Francisco State University, and California State University, Hayward;
WHEREAS, Nat Bates was an outstanding basketball and baseball player during his years in school
and college;
WHEREAS,Nat Bates worked for decades for the Alameda County Probation Department, starting in
1958 as a counselor, retiring in 1989 as an Adult Division supervisor; and
WHEREAS, Nat Bates was first elected to the Richmond City Council in 1967; and
WHEREAS, Nat Bates is serving his fifth (nonconsecutive) term as a Richmond council member,
WHEREAS,Nat Bates was twice elected mayor by his council colleagues, in 1971-72, and 1976-77;
and
WHEREAS,Nat Bates has served on distinguished list of state and national boards including the
Contra Costa Mayor's Conference, the East Bay Division of Cities, the League of California Cities, and
the National League of Cities; and
WHEREAS,Nat Bates has a long history of membership and participation in numerous community
groups including the Richmond Democratic Club, the Black Men &Women Political organization, the
Judge Patricia McKinley Foundation, the Richmond Boys & Girls Club; the Camp fire Girls, the Mt.
Diable Boy Scouts, the Richmond YMCA, the El Sobrante Girls Club, the Salesian Boys & Girls Club,
the Richmond Endowment Fund, and'the Richmond Unified Education Fund; and
WHEREAS, Nat Bates community efforts have focused strongly on youth;
WHEREAS, Nat Bates had four children and has seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren;
WHEREAS, the Don Bosco Service Award, named for the 1859 founder of the Salesians, is made
annually to someone who is a friend to children, particularly to children who are poor, abandoned, or at
risk;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County
hereby congratulates Nat Bates as the recipient of the 2004 Don Bosco Award, and honors his
enduring commitment to the children of West Contra Costa County;
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors members present on this 23`d day of March 2404.
