'The Business of Kids Day"
in Contra Costa County ) RESOLUTION NO. 20031528
"DWA,S the Congress of the United States has passed a resolutOt n supporting a balance between work and personal
life to be in the best interest of national worker productivity and has designated October as "National Work and Family
Month",and
WhZR AS, early education/child care allows working parents in Contra Costa County to earn$525 million annually,
increasing industry output by$4.92 billion,and
UjERF.,jS early educatimVchild care supports 35,600 jobs in the county and supports 4,757 early education child
care workers,and
94YEREAS early education/child care contributes $2.66 billion value added to the gross product of the county and
generates$225 million indirect tax revenues,and
WHEREAS early education/childcare increases company loyalty and worker productivity and consequently reduces costs
from employee turnover,absenteeism and low morale,and
Wjffi FAS quality early education/child care increases school readiness so children come to kindergarten ready to
succeed and increases the chances for success later in life,and
97DV EAS quality early education/child care reduces future public spending. It has been determined that for every
dollar invested up to seven dollars is saved in public expense in later years,and
94V—REAS the Contra Costa Council, the Contra Costa Economic Partnership, the Contra Costa First Five
Commission and the Contra Costa Child Care Council have collaborated to increase public awareness of the extensive
benefits and significant impacts of early educatiorVchild care, by holding a daylong conference entitled "the Business of
Kids"focused on the future of child care in Contra Costa County.
NOW, THEREFORA BEITRBSOLVEDthat the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors acknowledges early
education/child care to be an essential component of the County's infrastructure, contributing to the health and well being
of our neighborhoods and the business community and proclaims October 9, 2003 "The Business of Kids Day"in Contra
Costa County.
