SUPERVISORS GIOIA, UIUCEMA, GLOVER. & DeSAULNIER NOES: NONE ABSENT: NONE ABSTAIN: NONE DISTRICT III IS VACANT Resolution No. 20031276 In the Matter of Proclaiming May 2003 as ) Asthma Awareness Month In Contra Costa County WHEREAS,more than 12,000 children and 23,000 adults have been diagnosed with asthma in Contra Costa County, and WHEREAS, asthma is a chronic disease that,if not controlled,results in missed work and school days, and WHEREAS,it is recognized that asthma triggers located in the home, day dare center, school,workplace and outdoor environment need to be eliminated or controlled, and WHEREAS, the data indicates that higher rates of hospitalization due to asthma occurs more frequently in children of African American and Hispanic backgrounds from urban areas than the pediatric population at large, and WHEREAS, there still remains large numbers of children from families living in poverty that do not have health insurance resulting in limited access to necessary medications and equipment to treat asthma,and WHEREAS,involvement by parents and children in education programs to learn about asthma self- management will reduce the number of emergency medical visits and WHEREAS,it is important to coordinate all aspects of care from diagnosis to environmental improvements, and WHEREAS, Contra Costa Health Services recognizes improvement in health outcomes will occur with multi- divisional support within Health Services along with health providers in the community,and WHEREAS, the Contra Costa Health Services asthma projects, Community Action to Fight Asthma (CAFA), Childhood Asthma Management Project (CAMP), Child Asthma Among School-Aged Project (CAASA) and Monument Corridor Asthma Project will work together to reduce and prevent the incidence of asthma in children and the population at large, and NOW,THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED,that the Board of Supervisors does hereby proclaim May 2003, as Asthma Awareness Month Contra Costa County and calls upon the County's four asthma projects and all citizens,government agencies, elected officials,business,private institutions,industry, non-profit organizations, religious communities, and schools to work together to reduce the incidence of asthma among residents and alleviate the effects of asthma on the county's children and adults.
