RESOLUTION NO. 2003/2 72
H/HEP—W Violet Smith was a founding member of First 5 Contra Costa formerly the Children and Families
Prop 10 Commission as well as an active participant in the historic effort to develop the First 5 Contra Costa
strategic plan;and
Rgi,6RRAS, Violet Smith, as the chair of the Civic Engagement Committee, worked diligently to enlist
community participation in the efforts of the First 5 Contra Costa,and
971IEREA$ Violet Smith, has been an ardent member of the Program and Evaluation Committee that collected
information to improve and build the capacity of the programs funded by First 5 Contra Costa;and
U41EREA$ during her 27-year professional career, Violet Smith served as Director of a number of nonprofit
agencies, including a preschool for children with developmental disabilities, a school volunteer program and as Project
Director and Vice President of a consulting firm that did extensive research, planning and evaluation of federally-
supported human services programs;and
WF RAS, Violet Smith has continued to be a vital force in community activities even after her retirement as
the Executive Director of the Contra Costa Crisis Center in 1986;and
WiSI"l;REAS, Violet Smith holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology
from the University of California, Berkeley;and
WHEREAS, Wolet Smith has served several terms as the chair of the Contra Costa Mental Health Commission
and the Mental Health Coalition;and
Violet Smith as an active and integral member of the Pacheco Municipal.Advisory Committee's
Beautification Committee assured that the community's needs were successfully met through her efforts that included
creation of information packets for the public, arranging public meetings, and working closely with the County's
Public Works Department for the Pacheco area;
NOW, THZWff0RF, BE 1'T RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors declare May 6h, 2003 `Violet
Smith Dsy"in recognition of her lifetime of devoted service to children and her community. We wish her well in her
future endeavors.She will be missed.
