April 2003 as Sexual Assa ult A wamn ess Month
in Contra Costa County RESOLLMON NO. 2003/238
UWEFZE4$ numerous states, counties and cities throughout the United States have declared April
as Seas=dAsmultAwamness Mon&, and
WHEM$ the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention have identifted sexual assault as a significant and costly health issue; and
WHEMS, Sexual Assault Awaivnea Month is meant to draw attention to the fact that
sexual violence is an intolerable crime with public health implications for everyone in Contra Costa
County whether a victim survivor, a family mem* significant other, neighbor or cworker of a
victim; and
WHEMS, rape and sexual assault crimes are committed against individuals whatever their age,
gender, racial, cultural or economic background with more than 70 percent of rapes going
unreported to law enforcement; and
WINES, there were 231 reported cases of forcible rapes in Contra Costa County in 2001 with
an increase in the number of adolescent victims; and
WHEMS, we must work together to educate our communities on how to prevent sexual assault
and how to support victims and survivors as well as provide public education and public discourse to
create an informed population; and
WHEM$ Contra Costa County strongly supports the dedicated efforts of Community Violence
Solutions to encourage all citizens to actively engage in public and private efforts to "Speak Out
Against Sexual Violence",
NOW, 7WEREFORA BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors does hereby declare
April 2003 as &rud Assault Awareness Month in Contra Costa County and reaffirm its
commitment to address the issues of sexual assault
PASSED AND ADOPTED on April 15, 2003 by a unanimous vote of the Board members
present.
