HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01012003 - 2003-108 In the Matter of Proclaiming ) The Week of March 10-16, 2003 ) As Cover the Unftwzed Week ) RESOLUTION NO. `<> WHEREAS,eight out often uninsured Contra Costans are in working families that cannot afford health insurance premiums and are not eligible for public programs,and WHEREAS,a slow economy,higher unemployment and rising health casts mean that more Contra Costans are becoming uninsured in our community,and WHEREAS,uninsured families who cannot afford needed medical care,live sicker and die younger than others with health coverage,and WHEREAS,uninsured children are almost five times more likely to be unable to receive needed dental care and four- and-one-half times more likely to do without needed prescription medicines or eyeglasses,and WHEREAS,uninsured women who develop breast cancer are twice as likely to die than insured women with the same diagnosis,and WHEREAS,uninsured men are nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed at a late stage of colon cancer than insured men, and WHEREAS,Contra Costa County recognizes the commitment and effort of the health care safety net providers who carry the extra burden of providing services to uninsured residents during these difficult and uncertain times,and WHEREAS,Contra Costa County has made a major commitment to providing health care for the uninsured through the Basic Health Care program which covers uninsured children and adults not eligible for other coverage up to 300% of the federal poverty level,and WHEREAS,California's Governor has proposed changes in Medi-Cal services and eligibility processes that would increase the number of uninsured in California,making it even more difficult for Boards of Supervisors and safety net providers to maintain current services,and WHEREAS,the Contra Costa Health Access Coalition is organized to increase health care access by raising awareness about available health insurance resources and the need to expand health coverage for the uninsured, NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County hereby proclaims the week of March 10-16,2003 as Cover The Uninsured Week in Contra Costa County,and encourages the Conference of Mayors and Chambers of Commerce to learn more about this issue and to work with the Public and Environmental Health Advisory Board and the Contra Costa Health Access Coalition to seek solutions to one of Contra Costa's most pressing problems.
