In the matter of Declaring October I through ) Resolution No. 2002/659
October 31, 2002 as "Breast Cancer Awareness )
Month" in Contra Costa County )
WHEREAS, in 2402, an estimated 203,500 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed
with new invasive cases of breast cancer and 40,000 deaths will be caused by it; and,
WHEREAS,breast cancer is second only to lung cancer in the number of cancer
deaths it causes in the country; and,
WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and every
women is at risk for breast cancer; and,
WHEREAS, although recent controversies about early screening methods have
:led many national and federal organizations to reconfirm the fact that since we don't
know yet what causes breast cancer or how to prevent it, the best protection is early
detection; and,
WHEREAS, the evidence is clear that now, more than ever, we need to remind
women to have their health screenings on a consistent basis; and,
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society and some of the nation's leading
Health organizations recommend women have regular mammograms, see their doctors
dor regular breast exams, and practice monthly breast self-exams; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, we the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County
eclare October 1 through October 31, 2002 to be "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in
Contra Costa County.

on the minutes of said Board of Supervisors on the date aforesaid.
