In the past 20 years medical science has made great strides in learning about alcohol and other drugs and the nature of addiction. Treatment for addiction is as effective as treatment for rather chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes, and high blood pressure:and WHEREAS, alcohol and other drugs is a major public health problem that puts millions of Americans at risk for alcohol-related and drug-related trafj`ac accidents, risky se,xual practices, juvenile delinquency, unwanted pregnancy, suicide, crime dysfunctional families, joblessness, homelessness, Hepatitis, HIV infection, etc. This year's theme "Join the Voices of Recovery: A Call to Action invites all segments of society to join the recovery community in supporting more quality treatment programs and services in an effort to eradicate the disease of addiction;and WHEREAS, prevention efforts can be effective in reducing the psychosocial and environmental factors; and WHEREAS, alcoholism and drug addiction can and do affect all people and families in our communities. Untreated addiction costs the state's workplaces billions of dollars in lost productivity, absenteeism, and accidents every year; and WHEREAS, every day in every part of Contra Costa County, men, women, and youth enter treatment for alcohol and other drugs, and begin the road to recovery, while families seek hope and recovery in support programs and counseling. WHEREAS, acknowledges September 2002 as National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month offers advocates of alcohol and other drugs treatment an opportunity to educate the public and policymakers about the effectiveness of treatment, and the contribution of people in recovery, NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the County Board of Supervisors does hereby proclaim that September 2002 is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month in Contra Costa County. As members of Contra Costa County's Board of Supervisors, we celebrate the tremendous strides taken by individuals who have undergone successful prevention, treatment and recognizes those in the treatment field who have dedicated their lives to helping people recover from addiction. We encourage all citizens to embrace this year's theme "Join the Voices of Recovery: A Call to Action'; invite all Contra Costa residents to recognizes benefits of alcohol and drug addiction treatment and recovery and to participate in the National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month activities.
