WW IEREAS,the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory(LLNL)is aU.S.Department of
Energy national laboratory operated by the University of California;
WHEREAS,Lawrence Livermore National Laborato anon inthe founded
in September 1952 as a second
nu<„lear weapons design laboratory to p design of our nation's nuclear
stockpile through creative science and engineering;
W iEREAS,when Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory opened in 1952,it consisted of a few
wf oden buildings on a deactivated US Naval Station in Livermore,.California.Fifty years later,
Lwwrence Livermore is a premier national laboratory that is part of the Department of Energy's
Ni�.tional Nuclear Security Administration;
WHEREAS,the Laboratory's focus is to ensure our country's national security through scientific
re€search and engineering development,responding to new world threats,and developing new
technologies,and its mission is to apply science and technology in the national interest,with a focus
ori global security,homeland security,global ecology,and bioscience
'V1HEREAS,over the last five decades,Livermore Lab has become one of the world's premier
scientific centers,using its knowledge of nuclear science and engineering to break new ground in
M3gnetic and laser fusion energy,non-nuclear energy,biomedicine,and environmental science;
WHEREAS,the Lab's mission for the next 50 years is"making a difference,malting history";
%1HEREAS,the Lab has been an employer of major significance in the Tri-Valley area and the Lab
amid its employees have been critical in the economic development of the Bay Area;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the Contra Costa Board of Supervisors recognizes the
iportance of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories both to the nation and to the Tri-Valley
and congratulates the Lab and its employees on the occasion of its�Okh anniversary.
INTRODUCED by Supervisor Donna Gerber and PASSED by a unanimous vote of the Board of
S Apervisors members present this 10th clay of September 2002.
