HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01012002 - 2002-413 �.'..' � �!J �'/ �_'✓' iii In the Matter of Recognizing the Work of ) the East Bay Stand Down Organizers ) And Supporting Participation in the ) September 5-8a;2002 East Bay Stand Down) RESOLUTION NO.2002/413 WHEREAS,the organizers of East Bay Stand Down recognized the need to serve the over 7,000 displaced, needy and homeless veterans of the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area; WHEREAS,the organizers pioneered the establishment of the East Bay Stand Down in 1999 and again in 2000 and now,again,in September of'2002, WHERAS,through the efforts of East Bay Stand Down in 1999,help was given to over 200 homeless,needy and displaced veterans and their families,and East Bay Stand Down 2000 aided over 300 displaced,homeless and needy veterans and their families, WHEREAS,the needy veterans received legal assistance through the Contra Costa County Superior Courts, District Attorney and,public Defenders offices along with the Alameda County and San Francisco County offices,social security assistance,medical assistance,substance abuse recovery assistance and many other services; WHEREAS,many of the veterans were able to go directly into recovery and housing programs,received clean legal.records,went to work,and many other tangible,direct benefits which will help them to become productive citizens again; WHEREAS,the organizers have expanded the program to serve over 400 veterans in 2007,and have expanded their community-based support through the addition of the sponsorship of the United Way,Eli Lily and Company,United Airlines,the Danville-Sycamore Valley Rotary Club,the California Department of Veteran Affairs,the U.S Army Reserves'352nd Comb4t Support Hospital,and the U.S.Army Reserve Training Services for Medical to the original organizers of the event,the Vietnam Veterans of Diablo Valley,the Ladies Auxiliary of the Antioch VFW Post 6435 and the U.S.Department of Veterans Affairs'Concord Vet Center,and WHEREAS,the East Bay Stand Down has become a model broad-based,grass roots effort to address the problems of homeless veterans in our communities through direct action, NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors recognizes and commends the organizers,sponsors and leaders of the East Bay Stand.Down, AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the East Bay Stand Down be recognized for its efforts to help those veterans who have served our Country and have fallen on hard.times, AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the many supporters and individual citizens,who have stepped forward in this effort with no personal gain or expectations other,than to help others also be recognized. The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors does hereby commend the work of East Bay Stand Down 2002. The County further recognizes and commends the over 71,000 veterans living in our County for their service to our Country. For those veterans who are homeless or in need,we encourage them to take advantage of the East Bay Stand Down as an avenue for them to regain the dignity and honor that they have so rightly earned.
