HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01012002 - 2002-379 In the Matter of Urging Governor Gray Davis ) And State Legislators to Support } The Continued Funding of Challenge II Grants } RESOLUTION NO.2002/379 WHEREAS,Circle of Care serves 180 girls throughout Contra Costa County;and WHEREAS, this program helps 12 to 18 year-old girls who have been in the juvenile justice system resume their education and seek help for drug and alcohol abuse;and WHEREAS, after-school programs provide mental health counseling, life skills instruction, communication skills,and goal-setting;and WHEREAS,early intervention with at-risk youth is critical in preventing them from getting involved in more serious criminal activities;and WHEREAS,studies have shown that,before entrance into a Circle of Care program,only 14%of the girls were attending school regularly,but with the program,school attendance improved dramatically and 89%of the girls had regular school attendance;and tf WHEREAS,evaluation studies have also shown that the girls in this program demonstrate improved relations with family and peers;and WHEREAS, the Circle of Care program receives approximately half of its annual budget from state funding, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors urges Governor Gray Davis and the State Assembly and State Senate to support funding for Challenge 11 grants in the 2002-2003 state budget.
