PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING
THE WEEK OF MAY 26TH, 2002
AS "ELDER ABUSE PREVENTION WEEK" RESOLUTION NO. 2002/294
WHEREAS, the California Department of Aging has declared May to be Older
Americans Month which is dedicated to actions supporting the well-being of senior
citizens; and
WHEREAS, projections indicate an expected increase of 103% in those Contra Costa
persons 55 or older between 1990 and 2010, and an anticipated increase of 237% among
persons 85 and older during this same period; and
WHEREAS, Elder Abuse is a crime, perpetrated against our most vulnerable citizens,
subjecting them to abuse,neglect and exploitation; and
WHEREAS, the number of Adult Protection Services referrals in FY 2000/ 01 was 325%
greater than in FY 1996/97; and
WHEREAS, the County of Contra Costa has acknowledged the level of expertise
necessary to investigate and prosecute the crime of elder abuse by creating an elder
abuse unit within the District Attorney's office; and
WHEREAS,Elder Abuse Prevention: A Consortium Serving Alameda and Contra Costa
Counties, has continued to provide services addressing this issue for the past seventeen
years; and
WHEREAS, the County Board of Supervisors urges the citizens of Contra Costa to
report and prevent incidents of adult abuse:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors proclaims the
week of May 26-31, 2002 as ELDER AND DEPENDENT ADULT ABUSE PREVENTION
WEEK in Contra Costa County.
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors on this
14th day of May, 2002
