As National Community Action Month RESOLUTION NO.2002/293
WHEREAS,community action agencies were created when the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 was
signed into law;and
WHEREAS,community action agencies have more than a 35-year history of promoting self-sufficiency for
the low income community;and
WHEREAS,community action agencies have made an essential contribution to individuals and families in
the United States by providing them with innovative and cost-effective programs;and
WHEREAS, community action agencies are needed as major participants in the reform of the welfare
system as we know,it;and
WHEREAS, welfare reform. in the State of California has benefited from partnerships formed with
community action agencies;and
WHEREAS,low income individuals and families continue to need opportunities to improve their lives`and
their living:conditions,thus ensuring that all citizens are able to live in dignity;and
WHEREAS,the State of California and the entire United Statesmust continue to wage war on poverty;by
prodding support and opportunity for all citizens in need of assistance;and
WHEREAS,the Contra Costa County Community Services Dept,the Community Action Agency for
Contra Costa County,has participated in this endeavor by assisting over 21,000 individuals and families in
their efforts towards self-sufficiency in 2001.
NOW,THEREFORE;BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors does hereby declare May 2002 as
NATIONAL COM`1vIU� MONTH in Contra Costa County.
PASSED ARID ADOPTED ON May i4,2002 by a unanimous vote, of the Board members present.
