AS SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH RESOLUTION NO. 2002/197
WHEREAS,in California there were 9,785 forcible rapes reported in 2000, 231 forcible rapes reported in
Contra Costa County in the same year,and 177 children interviewed for child molest;and
WHEREAS,it its estimated by the Bureau of Justice Statistics that over 70% of rapes are never reported to
police;and
WHEREAS,women,children and men of all ethnic and economic backgrounds are victims of sexual assault,
and it is estimated that one in three women,one in four girls,one in six boys,and one in eleven men will be
victims at least once in their lifetimes;and
WHEREAS,women,children,and men suffer multiple types of sexual violence including acquaintance rape,
stranger rape,sexual assault by an intimate partner,gang rape,incest,stalking,serial rape,ritual abuse,
sexual harassment,child sexual molestation,prostitution,pornography,and stalking;and
WHEREAS,women,children,and men in Contra Costa have the right to be safe from sexual violence in their
homes,at school,at work,and on the streets;and
WHEREAS,Community Violence Solutions is committed to ending sexual violence in Contra Costa and
provides essential victim,Sexual Assault Response Team and prevention services to members of our
community;and
WHEREAS,it is our responsibility to support rape survivors by treating them with dignity,compassion,and
respect;and hold perpetrators responsible for these violent acts;and
WHEREAS,the State of California recognizes April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month,
THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County designates that the
month of April,from this date forward,be Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Contra Costa County;and be
it further RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors reaffirms its commitment to address the issues of rape
and sexual assault in our County by acknowledging the work of Community Violence Solutions and its Rape
Crisis program in its efforts to stop these horrific crimes against our citizens.
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors on this
9th day of April,2002
