HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01012002 - 2002-196 F6 FO M4 In the Matter of Declaring ) April 14 to April 20 as ) SafetyBe&Safe U.S.A Week ) RESOLUTION NO. 20021196 " EREA,5 the number one preventable cause of death and injury of children and young adults is the automobile collision; and WIHER ,S approximately 200 children under sixteen are killed and over 28,000 injured in automobile collisions each year in California; and WHEREAS, up to 71% of these children would be alive today if they had been properly restrained in crash,tested car safety seats or safety belts; and KWE'R.F'A,S infants and young children are not capable of initiating action to use proper restraints and are not protected adequately by automatic belts or air bags use; and tiMEREAS only about 60% of children in this age group are protected by regular restraint use; and KWEREA,S crash.tested safety seats are moderately priced and widely available for purchase at retail stores and at low cost from car safety seat distribution programs throughout California; and WHETS the State of California has ruled that until children are both six years of age or sixty pounds or more, they must be restrained in child safety seats when riding in motor vehicles and that all other occupants must use safety belts; and WHEREA,; the goal of SafetyBeltSafe U.S.A. is to further the right of every child to protection from injury or death while being transported in a motor vehicle: NOW; THEREFORE,R.EFORE , BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors does hereby declare safety seat checkup week April 14 to April 20, 2002.
