RESOLUTION NO. 2002/92
IN SUPPORTAND RECOGNITION OF THE COALITION FOR CHILDREN'S PHYSICAL ACTIVITYAND
NUTRITION'S "HAVE FUN AND BE HEALTHY"CAMPAIGN
WHEREAS,the prevalence of overweight children has doubled in the past two decades,now affecting one in five
children and over half the adult population in the U.S.;and
WHEREAS,there are negative health and psychological consequences of obesity including diminished self-esteem and
an increased rate of diabetes H among children;and
WHEREAS,obesity rates are higher in low-income and food insecure households;and
WHEREAS,health care professionals will develop medical protocols and sensitive interventions for overweight
children,and prevention of obesity will be stressed through the adoption of healthy lifestyles for people of all sizes;and
WHEREAS,communities will plan parks,walkways and bike paths so children can be safe and active as they play,and
walk anti/or ride their bikes to school;and
WHEREAS,schools will provide health and physical education and only nutritious foods to children;and
WHEREAS,parents will model healthy lifestyles,good communication,social competency and spiritual wellness and
provide their children with a safe,loving environment;and
WHEREAS,faith based organizations and communities will provide a system to prevent and mitigate poverty,hunger
and food insecurity;and
WHEREAS,governments,communities,and faith-based organizations can provide a system to prevent and mitigate
poverty,hunger and food insecurity,and
WHEREAS,childhood is a precious time when patterns of self-care,self-esteem,healthy eating and physical activity is
modeled and encouraged for a lifetime of good health;and
WHEREAS,breastfeeding is the optimum nutrition for infants and the earliest protection from disease and hunger,
including diabetes,obesity and food insecurity;and
WHEREAS,the Coalition for Children's Physical Activity and Nutrition will raise awareness of the problem of
childhood obesity and assist communities,families and healthcare systems in preventing or abating the problem.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County hereby proclaims
March 12,2002 as"Have Fun and Be Healthy Day,"to highlight the campaign to prevent obesity and to promote
healthy lifestyles for all people living in Contra Costa County.
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors on this
12th clay of March, 2002
