RESOLUTION NO. 2002/ 88
Proclamation Proclaiming May 21,2002 as"Keep Music Alive in Our Schools"Day
in Contra Costa County and
Recognizing Lake Elementary,Rio Vista Elementary,and John Muir Elementary Schools as
2002 Recipients of the"Keep Music Alive" Program
WHEREAS,Many California school districts report there is little money to purchase new music instruments
or refurbish instruments on hand;and,
WHEREAS,School music departments suffer tremendously from the lack of suitable equipment;and,
WHEREAS,Music education is directly associated with higher test scores,lower dropout rates and improved
motor skills;and,
WHEREAS,Northern California McDonald's owner/operators,Donald McDonald House Charities of the Bay
Area, and The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation have developed"Keep Music Alive in Our Schools" to revive
music education;and,
WHEREAS,In only its fourth year,the Keep Music Alive program has donated nearly 3,500 instruments,valued
at$1 million to 111 elementary and middle schools touching 21,000 Bay Area schoolchildren;and,
WHEREAS,Keep Music Alive is donating more than$200,000 in new musical instruments to 32 Bay Area middle
and elementary schools this spring,and,
WHEREAS,Lake Elementary,Rio Vista Elementary and John Muir Elementary schools in Contra Costa County
are receiving a Keep Music Alive donations valued at over$19,895 in 2002;and,
WHEREAS, Keep Music Alive is making tremendous strides to place instruments in the hands of even more
children here in Contra Costa County;
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County hereby
proclaims Tuesday,May 21,2002,Keep Music Alive In Our Schools Day,demonstrating support for the
program as it seeks to revitalize music education;and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County hereby recognizes Lake
Elementary,Rio Vista Elementary,and John Muir Elementary for their participation in the 2002"Keep Music
Alive" program.
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors on this
14th Day of May, 2002
