Her rain gauge was a small, plastic garden-type variety which she would read daily at 8.00 a.m.;and 941EMS Helen Grinstead faithfully and on a rou4the<lock schedule since 1965, pulled and replaced the recorder chart after rainfall events, calculated, recorded, compiled and mailed the daily rainfall amounts with charts to the Mood Control District since 1965. A 41 year accurate accounting of rainfall is an invaluable service to the Hydrology program in Contra Costa County. 'This data has provided a record of longterm rainfall trends and a check on the District`s rainfatlrrunoff model calibration;and Tom'=IEREAS, Helen Grinstead, in 1965, was acknowledged far her record by the Flood Control District, and her plastic,readrevery clay rain gauge was upgraded to a metal, automatic recording rain gage;and UgIEREAS Helen Grinstead is a reflection of selfless and nobility of the soul.Acheerful attitude,can-do mentality, attention to detail and a desire fry°accuracy is icing on the cake. Helen has exhibited these characteristics in providing a remarkable 41,year career as a rainfall observer. In an age of electronic wizardry and gizrnos, the Flood Control District loaned a once state4-art rain gauge collector and recorder with a wind up clock to Helen 3 7years ago. She became an expert on keeping the gauge running,going the extra mile to insure that inches of rainfall were accounted for, and WHEREAS Helen Grinstead exemplifies the true sprint of volunteerism for the reason that, as citizens, the quality of the life we live can in great measure be gauged by what we give to others in the way of our time and talents. She is a great example to her husband, three children, her two grandsons,and Contra Costa County neighbors.
