HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01012002 - 2002-045 OJ -c2,- Proclaiming A Season for Nonviolence Walk for Peace at Home RESOLUTION NO. 2002145 wHERFAS in October 1999 it was recognized that Contra Costa County needed to respond to "A Season for Nonviolence," an annual event, January 30' through April 44"calnmemarating the memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King,Jr.;and IERFAS Contra Costa County in the State of California, and our entire nation continues to confront the challenge of violence in the form of hate crimes, brutality,domestic abuse and other forms of inhumanity;and UW EERY ,fan awareness of nonviolent principles and practices is a powerful way to heal and transform our lives and communities, to recognize the dignity and worth of every human being, and to promote peace and harmony among all people regardless of race, color, culture, class, language, faith, age, gender, sexual preference or other apparent difference;and %HEREAS the principles and practices of nonviolence were epitomized in the lives and work of two international leaders,Mahatma Mohandas K. Gandhi and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.;and 9WERFAS,the Season for Nonviolence will open in Contra Costa County at the Martin Luther King Jr., Birthday Celebration in Walnut Creek, California on Monday, January 21, 2002 and the culmination event will be in Pleasant Hill, California on Sunday,April 7, 2002;and WIIEREAS,the national opening for the Season of Nonviolence will be held on both coasts on Wednesday,January 30' in Los Angeles at the Agape International Center of Truth and in New York at the United Nations, and the culmination events will be within the first two weeks in April 2002 in New York at the United Nations, in Chicago and at Morehouse College in Atlanta;and UWE'REAS, during the period between January 30 and April 4, 2002, groups throughout the United States and the world will sponsor projects and programs to create greater awareness and consciousness of the principles and practices of nonviolence, including symposia on interfaith and interracial heating, days of dialogue, prayer and meditation, artistic and cultural events,essay contests,peace walks and special activities for children;and WHEREAS establishing peace is a complex task requiring a new level of commitment to resolve issues not customarily associated with the pursuit of peace and we, here in Contra Costa County, have a great opportunity to focus the hearts and minds of our citizens on nonviolence.in recognition and celebration of A Season for Nonviolence; NOW, ?JIEREF01 ZF, BE IT RESOLVED that we, the Board of Supervisors for Contra Costa County, proclaim January 30-April 4, 2002,as A SF.ASONFOR NOAWOLFVCBand BE IT FURTHER RFSOLVED that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors declare April 7, 2002, a day dedicated to making a direct impact for peace with a walk and event commemorating obse►vaatm for nonviolence and loved onus lost to violence.
