HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01012001 - 2001-610 _W_ 66" Yf�A6��� 61 In the Matter of RESOLUTION NO. 2001/610 THE CONTRA COSTA BOARD OF SUPERVISORS TO SUPPORT THE FUNDING OF THE ANNUAL SCHOOL BUS PASS PILO,, PRQjfC BY- METROPOLITAN TRANSPORTATION COMMd WHEREAS,the Metropolitan Transportation Commission(MTC)is the transportation planning and financing agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay.Area;and WHEREAS,MTC is in the process of updating the twenty-five year.Regional Transportation Plan (RTP);and WHEREAS,public outreach meetings were conducted on the draft RTP to receive public comment and nine of the meetings were held in communities that are underserved or unserved;.and WHEREAS,comments received at the public workshops focused on transportation accessibility and affordability; and WHEREAS, a proposal has been drafted for MTC`s consideration by Assemblywoman Dion Aroner, Contra Costa County`Supervisor jolmGioia,and Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson which addresses accessibility and affordability in the AC Transit service area; and WHEREAS,the proposal is for an Annual School Bus Pass Pilot Project that would"provide a free bus pass to 33,000,middle and high school students in the AC Transit service area who are in the free or reduced lunch program;and WHEREAS,the;proposal:would also provide highly reduced bus passes to middle and high school students who are not eligible for free or reduced lunches;and WHEREAS,students who cannot afford bus fare to attend school are not only, denied an equal opportunity for an education but the school districts are penalized by increased absenteeism;and WHEREAS,studies cites that school children who are involved in after-school activities are less likely to become involved in alcohol and drug abuse,criminal activity,and teen pregnancy and some school children cannot afford bus fare to attend after-school activities;and WHEREAS, access to school is fundamental to the well-being of the individual and the state, and addresses concerns of equity in the region;and NOW, THEREFORE, BE I T RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does hereby support the request to MTC to fund the"Annual School Bus Pass Pilot Project."
