HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01012001 - 2001-557 WO"0�, W6�J& e6 W,,,O'�, ea In the Matter of Honoring Harry Yahata ) On the Occasion of His Retirement ) RESOLUTIONNO. 2001/557 WHEREAS Harry Yahata has served Caltrans for 40 years, including four years as District Director for Caltrans District 4, managing the 1,500 mile state highway system in the nine Bay Area counties and overseeing 4,000 employees; and WHEREAS during A& Yahata's tenure as District Director, in partnership with local and state agencies, the Department of Transportation initiated construction on capital projects with a value in excess of $1.5 billion directly benefiting Contra Costa County, including: two new bridges across the Carquinez Strait, from Crockett to Vallejo and Martinez to Benicia; the widening of Route 4 in Franklin Canyon and Hercules; the widening of Route 4 from Bailey Road in Bay Point to Loveridge in Pittsburg, with median for a future BART extension; and the seismic retrofit of the existing Benicia- Martinez, Carquinez and Richmond San Rafael Bridges; and WHEREAS Mr: Yahata's tenure as District Director was consistently marked by a spirit of cooperation, facilitation and an understated but wholly effective approach to problem-solving. Even difficult challenges such as finalizing approvals for reconstruction of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and its western approach for seismic safety have been addressed, allowing critical work on those projects to proceed; and WHEREAS, Harry Yahata ably represented the State Business, Transportation and Housing Agency on the Metropolitan Transportation Commission; and WHEREAS Harry Yahata has worked diligently to improve transportation in the Bay Area, always in a collaborative and collegial manner with many divergent (and often contradictory) points of view represented by the regions multiple transportation organizations and public interest groups; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors does hereby proclaim December 4, 2001 as Harry Yahata Day in Contra Costa County.
