HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01012001 - 2001-522 (�-��k ,_,W0 a4,1 /0/ye�0 6 6��� 0/ C, Ys eow4a� e� e , ea44,�O,� In the Matter of RESOLUTION NO. 2001/522 SUPPORTING THE WEST CONTRA COSTA COUNTY AIDS CANDLELIGHT VIGIL ON NOVEMBER 30, 2001 AND THE WEST CQNTRA:COSTA COUNTY WORLD AIDS DAY SUMMIT ON DECEMBER 1 2001 ,G WHEREAS,There have:been more than 2199 cases of AIDS and more than1313 AIDS related deaths reported among Contra Cosh residents since the first AIDS case was diagnosed in Contra Costa County in 1982; and t WHEREAS, it is'estimated,that,more than 565 AIDS related deaths have been ieportedin West Contra Costa County and` WHEREAS,a state of emergency in Contra Costa County was declared for HIV/AIDS in 1999 to bring awareness to the pandemic;and WHEREAS,Supervisor John Gioia and Richmond Mayor Rosemary Corbin formed the West County AIDS Task ,. force'in 1999 in response to the alarming number of reported AIDS cases in Contra Costa County;"and WHEREAS,The West County AIDS Task Force includes the participatioi-vo£the Contra Costa County Health Services Department, West-Contra Costa Unified School District, Tranqui14um; Rubicon; Exchange Works, Neighborhosod Douse,rhe Office.of Congressman George Miller;Easter Dill iJrtid Methodist Church, Davis Chapel, New Corinec qns, octc�rt%' :Hospital;'Kaiser 'Permanente, Brookside Community<Health Center, members of the businiizess community,the City of Richmond and surrounding communities;and WHEREAS West Contra Costa County women,teenagers,young adults and people of color(especially African- Amerieans).continue to be at highest risk•of HIV infections;and WHEREAS, no cure exists for AIDS{ and HIV education and pxeventxon remain the most effective means of limiting the impact of die epidemic;and WHEREAS,World AIDS Day emerged'from the call by the World Summit of Ministers of'Health on Programmes for AIDS Prevention in 1988 to open channels of communication, strengthen the exchange of information and experience, and;forge a spiritof social tolerance;and WHEREAS, The West County AIDS Task Force is organizing an AIDS Candlelight Vigil at the steps of the Richmond Civic Center Plaza on November,3Q,2QQ1 in honor'of those who have died from AIDS and who are living with HIV/AIDS;and WHEREAS,the West County AIDS TaskForceis also hosting a World AIDS Day Summit at Richmond High School on December 1,2001 to educate the residents of Contra Costa County about HIV/AIDS; and WHEREAS, The World AIDS Day Summit at Richmond High School will feature a day long resource and information fair,and will include"Break-Out"Activities for community residents,especially for young people, and people living with HIV/AIDS. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does hereby support the West Contra Costa County AIDS Candlelight Vigil on November 30,2001 and the West Contra Costa County World AIDS Day Summit on December 1,2001.
