HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01012001 - 2001-500 L , � r THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Adopted this Resolution on October 16, 2001 by the following vote: AYES: SUPERVISORS GIOIA, GERBER, DESAULNIER, GLOVER AND UILKEMA NOES: ,vOr,E ABSENT: NONE ABSTAIN: NONE Resolution No. 2001/ 500 Subject: Proclaiming October 21-27,2001 as) Lead Poisoning Prevention Week ) WHEREAS, the California Department of Health Services (DHS) estimates that nearly 6,000 children in Contra Costa County have unsafe levels of lead in their blood; and WHEREAS, despite very limited screening, the County has identified nearly 650 lead-poisoned children, the majority from low-income communities; and WHEREAS, Contra Costa County's Lead Poisoning Prevention Project has been working since 1993 to identify lead-poisoned children and to provide follow-up and preventive services; and WHEREAS, the major premise behind Contra Costa County's Lead Poisoning Prevention Project is to recognize that lead poisoning is preventable, and that the strategies required to make an impact on public health begin with collaboration of many segments of the community; and WHEREAS, partners of the Contra Costa County Lead Poisoning Prevention Project include, but are not limited to, Community Housing Development Corporation of North Richmond, Contra Costa Childcare Council, Greater Richmond Interfaith Program, Lao Family Community Development, Neighborhood Environmental, Neighborhood House of North Richmond, Pacific Community Services, Pittsburg Healthy Cities Program, Pittsburg Preschool Coordinating Council, Promoci6n Latina, Richmond Toxic Coalition, Santa Fe Neighborhood Council, United Laotian Community Development and the West County Toxics Coalition; and WHEREAS, the Contra Costa County Lead Poisoning Prevention Program is working with Project REAL (Richmond Effort to Abate Lead), a program of the City of Richmond Redevelopment Agency funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to make houses and apartments in West Contra Costa County lead safe for low-income children and families — to date, more than 100 children have been provided with lead case management services and education; and WHEREAS, despite efforts at education and prevention, residents in Contra Costa County continue to be poisoned by lead from deteriorated lead-based paint, other sources in the home, workplace exposure and historic environmental contamination. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors does declare October 21- 27, 2001 as Lead Poisoning Prevention Week in Contra Costa County.
