BACKGROUND: Representatives of Albertson's, Inc. and Safeway, Inc. and union representatives of nearly 25,000 Bay Area supermarket workers have been meeting for the past nine months to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement. The parties have failed to reach an agreement. The markets have given a "last, best and final offer" that expires on or before October 10, 2001. The eight Bay Area unions are unanimously recommending rejection of this final offer to their memberships. No further negotiations between the parties have been scheduled.
