RESOLUTION NO. 2001/469
Subject: "Lights On Afterschool" day, October 12, 2001
WHEREAS the Board of Supervisors recognizes that quality Afterschool programs benefit
children and youth by offering academic and cultural enrichment, homework help, recreation
and play, health education, good nutrition, youth leadership and development, and
interaction with caring adults who serve as mentors and role models; AND
WHEREAS quality Afterschool programs can increase the ability of low-income parents to
obtain and retain jobs by offering a safe, reliable, structured environment for their children
during the afternoon hours; AND
WHEREAS evidence is growing that Afterschool programs not only have positive outcomes
for children, families and communities, but can also contribute to reductions in County costs
for crisis programs that address teen pregnancy, juvenile accidents and crime, substance
abuse, school dropouts, etc.; AND
WHEREAS the Board of Supervisors recently authorized an innovative pilot program, the
"Afterschool4AII" initiative, to test models in 4 school district areas in which community-
based organizations have a leading role in service design and delivery; AND
WHEREAS October 11, 2001 is national "Lights On Afterschool" day, designed by the
Afterschool Alliance to spotlight innovative, high quality afterschool programs available to
communities across the country; AND
WHEREAS the Board of Supervisors will co-sponsor the County's annual "Lights On
Afterschool" recognition event on October 12, 2001, an "Afterschool4AII" forum featuring
Carla Sanger, Director, "L.A.'s BEST" Afterschool enrichment program;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors
declares October 12, 2001 to be "Lights On Afterschool" Day in Contra Costa County and
is pleased to co-sponsor the "Afterschool4AII" forum to be held on that day.
I hereby certify that this is a true and correct copy of an action taken
and entered on the minutes of the Board of Supervisors on the date
shown.

SUBJECT: "Lights on Afterschool" Day
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION(S):
CONSIDER adopting a resolution declaring October 12, 2001 as "Lights On Afterschool" day in Contra
Costa County and co-sponsoring the "Lights On Afterschool" event on that day.
BACKGROUND/REASON(S) FOR RECOMMENDATION(S):
"Lights on Afterschool" is part of a national initiative to promote awareness about innovative, high quality
afterschool programs. The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors recently approved funding to
implement a pilot program aimed at improving and expanding afterschool programs in an effort to
positively affect the health, well-being, and academic progress of Contra Costa school-age children and
youth.
