HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01012001 - 2001-242 � ,,w y eoj�& eomnl��, In the Matter of RESOLUTION NO. 2001/242 RECOGNIZING THE PACIFIC AREA TRAINING TEAM OF THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FOR ITS WORK WITH DISF�DVANTAYOUTHS AT RICHMOND HIGH ED SCHOOL WHEREAS,the Pacific Area Tritning.Tear .of the United`States Coast Guard has been providing sailing instruction to disacluantaed youths at Richmond High School for thepast.four years;and WHEREAS,members of tfie Pacific,Area'Training Team of the United States Coast Guard are allowed by their Commanding Officer to giveh classroom instruction at Richmond High School in the-morning and perform their regular,Coast Guard duties in the afternoon;and artne WHEREAS, the Pacific Area Training Team of the United States,Coast Guard has built a unique p rship with Richmond High School and Crosscurrent Voyages,a private ron profit organization,in order to provide`sailing instruction to the students aboard the sailing vessel Neh nrah;and WHEREAS,m'addition to strengthening their,math and reasoning skip,Richmond 1 hgh School"students have also increased their voeabuiary with nautical terms, learned naritirne history, and marine environmental edueghon`because of training;and WHEREAS,'the students also'acquirecl an awareness of the role of the Coast Guard,which,includes drug interdiction,vessel regulation,licensing,and search and rescue in the Bay and alf'o4vigable.waters,and WHEREAS,having learned maritime skills such as lowering the sails,•anchoring, steering the vessel, navigation,chart reading,radar reading, giving and receiving commands,and=91 new career opportunities have been opened to students who have graduated from the programs and WHEREAS',the Pacifrc.Ai ea Tratning Team of the UnitedStates Coast Guard'has,proven its importance to the youths of'Richmorid High School and the community it serves; NOW, THEREEORtBE tT=RESOLVED that the Board off'Supervisors'of Contra Costa County ... does hereby recogPize and honor'the Pacific Area Training Teabi of the United"States Coast Guard for its exemplary contrib?utions to the education of d►sdvantaged youths„at'R'chmond High School.
