RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF RESOLUTION NO. 2001/190
EFFORTS TO BRING THE 2012
OLYMPIC GAMES TO THE BAY
AREA
WHEREAS, the Olympic Games take place every four years; and
WHEREAS, a well-managed Olympic Games can provide many economic and social benefits to a community.
The economic impact of hosting the Games,based on preliminary economic impact research and analysis is
$7.6 billion to the local economy; $2.3 billion in direct revenue and $5.3 billion in indirect spending; and
WHEREAS, the current effort to bring the Olympic Games to the Bay Area is in its domestic phase with the
Bay Area competing against seven other cities in the United States; and
WHEREAS, BASOC—Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee has been formed with many community
leaders in order to guide the Bay Area's bid for the Olympic Games; and
WHEREAS, the Bid document was submitted to the United States Olympic Committee on December 15, 2000;
and
WHEREAS, the bid document consists of 19 "themes" divided into three volumes, nearly 700 pages, covering
all aspects of the games, including information about venues, transportation, housing, environment, weather,
people, communications, technology, security, our communities, the Olympic sports program the Opening and
Closing Ceremonies and the Olympic Arts and Cultural Festival; and
WHEREAS, the San Francisco Bay Area is in excellent position to be chosen as the United States candidate
city due to the world renowned city of San Francisco, being the home of Silicon Valley, the existence of world
class sports facilities and universities, the active support of the Northern California Olympians Alumni Chapter,
and ideal weather conditions.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors
enthusiastically endorses and support the efforts of BASOC (Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee) to bring
the 2012 Olympic Games to the San Francisco Bay Area.
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors members present this 15th day of May 2001.
