In the Matter of Proclaiming the Month )
Of May, 2001 as Mental Health Month )
In Contra Costa County ) RESOLUTION NO. 2001/ 107
WHEREAS, mental illness affects millions of adults, adolescents, children and their families
and causes much stress and suffering as well as costing our nation billions of dollars annually for
lost productivity, economic dependence and health care; and
WHEREAS, mental illness is a physical and emotional condition that is treatable, with recovery
possible through appropriate medical, social and support services; and
WHEREAS, people with mental disabilities share with all people a desire and need for
interpersonal acceptance and support, decent housing and an opportunity to be productive; and
WHEREAS, through the prevention and treatment of mental and emotional disorders we can
return individuals to productive and successful lives; and
WHEREAS, the commitment must begin at the local community level to increase awareness of
mental illness and to promote the understanding that people with mental disorders can and do
lead productive and satisfying lives;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Supervisors that May, 2001 be
proclaimed as Mental Health Month in Contra Costa County.
PASSED AND ADOPTED ON March 20, 2 00 1, by a unanimous vote of the Board members present.
