HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01012000 - 2000-555 « « gmtm goat" RECOGNIZING THE Cfr'Y OF HERCULES' 100TR YEAR RESOLUI ION NO. 2000/555 OF INCORPORATION (DECEMBER 15, 1900 -- 2000), AND ACKNOWLEDGING ITS DIVERSE AND VARIED HISTORY WHEREAS, the California Powder Works Company purchased land on the isolated shares of the San Pablo Bay in 1879, and WHEREAS, the name Hercules came from a potent and explosive black powder first made by California Powder Works starting in 1881, and WHEREAS, December 14, 1900, with a population of 100 people, Hercules officially became an incorporated town, and WHEREAS, the Hercules plant operated without problems for 95 years under the ownership of the Hercules Powder Company, but ceased production at the Hercules site in 1966, and WHEREAS, Hercules, Inc. no longer felt the need for the buffer lands surrounding the plant, they began selling large parcels to developers, and the City Council developed a general plan for a city of 22,000 residents by the year 2000, and WHEREAS, in 1974 the first large parcel was purchased by Centex Homes with resident arriving in early 1976, and WHEREAS, Hercules now boasts a population of approximately 22,000 and has truly grown and prospered. NOW,THEREFORE, BE ff RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County hereby acknowledges the 1001h anniversary of the City of Hercules. PASSED by a unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors members present this 12th day of December, 2000.
