BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
IN HONOR OF GENE WOLFE
UPON HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE RESOLUTION NO: 2000/512
CITY COUNCIL OF WALNUT CREEK
WHEREAS, Gene Wolfe, who was born in Ohio but has been a native of the East Bay since 1956, will
retire from the Walnut Creek City Council in December of this year•,
WHEREAS, Gene is a highly decorated World War II veteran who holds a Batchelor of Arts degree from
the University of Cincinnati and a Masters of Divinity from Yale University;
WHEREAS, Gene has served his communities as an ordained minister, director of social welfare
organizations and community development programs, active participant in the civil rights struggle of the
1960'x, leader in the fair housing movement, pioneer in affirmative action in employment training and
minority contracting,and high-ranking public servant in the City of Oakland's Redevelopment Agency and
its Office of Community Development;
WHEREAS, Gene was first elected to the Walnut Creek City Council in 1991, receiving the highest
number of votes of all seven candidates for three positions, was re-elected in 1996, and twice served as
Mayor;
WHEREAS, Gene's record of public participation and accomplishment also extends to County and
regional bodies he has served on the East Bay Regional Park District Public Advisory Committee, the
County's Advisory Council on Aging,the Contra Costa Mayors Conference,the County's Juvenile Justice
Systems Planning and Juvenile Hall Replacement Committees, the Contra Costa County Transit District
Board, the Board of the Gardens at Heather Farm, the Walnut Creek Playhouse West Theater Board, and
the Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority(which achieved major reductions of rates for 150,000 residents of
Central County when he was chair);
WHEREAS,in his nine years of service on the City Council,Gene has been a leading advocate in dialogue
and communication with the business community;
WHEREAS,in the 1990's with Gene's energy,leadership and collegial style,the City has forged ahead to
become the East Bay's most vibrant and successful downtown regional shopping,business and cultural arts
center,and a prime example of municipal growth management and downtown redevelopment;and
WHEREAS, Gene's advocacy interests have also provided leadership for new neighborhood parks, open
space, youth sports fields, community gymnasiums, private foundation funding for the arts, parking and
traffic improvements,infill housing development,affordable housing,and services for the homeless; ,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County
commends and thanks Gene Wolfe for his invaluable contributions to the people of Walnut Creek and
Contra Costa County. We hope that he will continue to be actively involved in community affairs, and we
wish him and his wife Muriel the very best in years to come.
