HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01012000 - 2000-495 The Board of Supervisors Contra Costa County In the Matter of Proclaiming the month ) Resolution 2000/495 of November 2000 as "Homeless Awareness ) Month" in Contra Costa County ) WHEREAS,there are homeless persons in Contra Costa County, and WHEREAS, Contra Costa County believes that everyone has a basic human right to decent and affordable housing, and WHEREAS, the rise in homelessness over the past decade is largely due to a growing shortage of affordable housing, and WHEREAS, the demand for subsidized housing clearly exceeds the supply, forcing many people to find alternative temporary shelter, or live on the streets, and WHEREAS, a significant portion of our community is marginally housed and at risk of becoming homeless, and WHEREAS,there are many individuals, community groups, non-profit groups, and faith groups in the county that should be recognized for their efforts to address homelessness and housing issues, and WHEREAS, it is recognized that in Contra Costa County, as it is elsewhere in the nation,that homelessness is often the end result of multiple factors, such as displacement due to unemployment, underemployment, escalating housing costs, and fixed incomes that can no longer defray the cost of living due to exorbitant health care costs. In addition,there are those who suffer from mental health issues, or drug and alcohol addictions and other disabling conditions that need support services to maintain housing, and NOW,THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED,that the Board of Supervisors does hereby proclaim November, 2000, as Homeless Awareness Month in Contra Costa County and calls upon all citizens, government agencies, elected officials,business and private institutions, nonprofit agencies, religious communities, and schools to work together to alleviate homelessness through developing and sustaining affordable housing, critical support services, and responding compassionately to people who are h less.
